IS215UCVEM09: The Enhanced M-Series Mark VI Controller

How the M-Series Differs from UCVEH2
The base UCVEH2 is a single-slot controller with one Ethernet port to the Unit Data Highway. The M-series UCVEM modules carry all of the UCVEH2's capability and add support for additional Ethernet ports and Profibus; several M variants provide a secondary 10BaseT/100BaseTX Ethernet port that can be placed on a separate IP subnet and configured through the toolbox, carrying EGD and Ethernet Modbus traffic to third-party DCS or PLC equipment. That difference matters when replacing a board: an M-series controller and an H-series controller are not interchangeable if your application depends on those extra ports or on Profibus.
Simplex, TMR and the Voting Path
Whatever the variant, the UCVE runs in simplex or triple-modular-redundant systems. In simplex it exchanges process inputs and outputs through the I/O boards; in TMR the <R>, <S> and <T> controllers work on voted inputs, hand computed outputs to the output hardware for voting, and share internal state among the three. All of this external data transfer crosses the VME backplane through the VCMI communication board, which also provides the clock the controller synchronizes to.
Is the Controller Really at Fault?
Because the M-series controller touches so many communication paths, it draws blame for problems that are not its own. Before replacing an IS215UCVEM09, confirm:

Configuration and firmware. The controller validates its toolbox configuration against the hardware at power-up; a mismatched or partial ControlST download, or corrupt boot media, will fault a good board.

Secondary-network configuration. On M-series boards, a missing or wrong secondary-Ethernet or Profibus setup can look like a controller fault when it is really a configuration gap. Re-check the toolbox settings against the hardware.

VCMI and backplane. The UCVE reaches the I/O only through the VCMI over the VME bus; a VCMI, backplane or seating fault imitates a controller failure.

Rack power. A weak +5 V rail resets the processor.

Upstream I/O and core isolation. A failing I/O board can report upstream, and in TMR you should confirm which core is affected before ordering.
