How the IS215ACLAH1AL Regulates the EX2100 Excitation Loop
The IS215ACLAH1AL is the Application Control Layer (ACL) board that runs the outer-loop regulators inside a GE EX2100 generator excitation system. It is easy to assume from the IS215 prefix that this is a turbine-control card, but the ACLA lives on the excitation side of the plant: it is the master controller that decides how much field the exciter should deliver, then hands the fast switching down to the power stage. Everything a voltage-regulation engineer tunes — the automatic voltage regulator (AVR), power system stabilizer (PSS), under-excitation limiter (UEL) and VAR/power-factor control — is executed here as an outer control loop.
The module is a two-half-slot board that seats in the EX2100 exciter rack on the Exciter Backplane, alongside the DSPX signal-processing board it partners with. It provides the Ethernet link out to the operator HMI, the LCI and the turbine control, and it also carries serial and ISBus traffic, so it doubles as the exciter's communications hub as well as its regulator. As a microprocessor-based master controller it performs these duties over both the Ethernet and ISBus networks.
Diagnosing Before You Buy: Is It the ACL or Something Around It?
Because the ACL sits at the center of the excitation loop, a lot of unrelated faults get blamed on it. Spend a few minutes ruling these out and you may save a board:
-
Application code, not hardware. After a previous replacement the board can be running the wrong configuration or a mismatched firmware/EEPROM. Compare the loaded settings in the toolbox against the machine's records first.
-
The measurement and power stage. A false regulator alarm is frequently a field-side event — loss of PT/CT sensing, a firing or SCR bridge fault, or a fuse — rather than the ACL itself. Verify the exciter power section and the field before you condemn the module.
-
Backplane and neighbor boards. A reseated connector, a backplane problem, or a DSPX fault can surface as an ACL error because the two exchange data continuously. Reseat and check the neighbor first.
-
Control power. Confirm the board is actually receiving its supply; a marginal control-power feed can look like a processor that will not stay up.
If your EX2100 is a redundant system, read the diagnostics to see which channel dropped out instead of swapping everything. The GEH-6632 user guide and the GEI-100434 instruction manual are the right references for interpreting the exciter alarms.
Where the “AL” Fits in the Part Number
Read left to right, IS215ACLAH1AL is the IS215 assembly of the ACLA function in hardware group H1, and the final L is the assembly's revision letter. The underlying board is cataloged as IS200ACLAH1A. Revisions such as this generally reflect manufacturing and artwork updates rather than a change of role, so match the full label string and let us confirm whether an adjacent revision is interchangeable for your exciter.
Companion Boards and the ACLE Generation
An EX2100 exciter node is a set of boards, not a single card: the ACL works with the DSPX processor and the exciter backplane, and in ISBus systems the ACLI variant adds two ISBus ports to the same design. When you move up a generation, the ACLE (IS215ACLE…) replaces the ACLA with a higher-level assembly, a newer processor and two faceplate Ethernet ports for EX2100e exciters — related, but not a direct slot-for-slot substitute. Our GE Speedtronic Part Number Decoder spells out each field, and you can explore more GE control hardware in the GE Speedtronic Turbine Control Boards catalog.
Getting an Accurate Quote
Help us match the right exciter board by sending:
- The complete part number and suffix (IS215ACLAH1AL) plus the revision on the label, ideally with a photo.
- The exciter platform (EX2100 or EX2100e) and simplex-versus-redundant configuration.
- Any partner boards you are sourcing at the same time, such as the DSPX.
- How many you need and your timeline.
