IS220PPDAH1A: "Plug and Play" Comes With a Real-World Caveat

PPDA — GE's Power Distribution System Feedback pack for the Speedtronic Mark VIe platform, documented in GE's GEH-6721 Mark VIe Control System Guide — is designed around electronic IDs: every power distribution board it connects to identifies itself automatically, and the pack uses that information to populate the correct feedback onto IONet without manual mapping. In principle, that makes a replacement pack close to plug-and-play.
In practice, plant experience with this exact pack type shows the picture is a little more involved. Even with automatic board recognition, a genuine replacement typically still needs to be reconfigured through ToolboxST — boot loader, baseload, firmware, and parameters downloaded to the new pack — before a fault actually clears. Auto-recognition tells the pack what it's connected to; it doesn't substitute for the standard commissioning steps GE's software expects for a new module.
Functionally, PPDA is unlike the discrete and analog I/O packs elsewhere in a Mark VIe cabinet. PDIA, PDIO, and PAIC all mount on field-wiring terminal boards and process live signals from sensors, switches, and actuators. PPDA doesn't touch field devices at all: it mounts on one of the Mark VIe's 28 V control power distribution boards — JPDS, JPDC, JPDM, or JPDG — and monitors that board and up to five more like it (including JPDB, JPDE, and JPDF, chained by ribbon cable), reporting power bus voltage, branch circuit fuse status, ground fault conditions, and bulk power supply health to the <R>, <S>, or <T> controller. It reports; it does not act. Any protective response has to already be built into the controller's application logic.
Diagnosing Before You Commit to a Replacement
- A power-distribution alarm doesn't automatically mean the PPDA pack has failed — the board it mounts on, or a loose ribbon cable between power distribution boards, can produce the same symptoms and are worth checking first.
- Look at whether the fault is isolated to one controller leg (<R>, <S>, or <T>) or common to all three; a shared power feed problem behaves differently than a single failed pack.
- Rule out a recent voltage spike or dip on the AC or DC supply to the power distribution module before ordering.
- If you do replace the pack, plan for a full ToolboxST download rather than expecting the fault to clear the moment the new unit is plugged in.
