How the VPRO Module Protects the Turbine

That IONet traffic reaches the UCVE processor only by way of the VCMI board, which acts as the translator between the protection module and turbine control.
Physically, the VPRO drives trip solenoids through the TREG terminal board (positive connection) and TPRO (negative connection), and either terminal board can initiate a trip. This hardwired arrangement is intentionally kept separate from software logic, part of why the system is considered independent protection rather than just another control function.
Symptoms That Look Like a VPRO Fault (But Aren't)
Before assuming a VPRO card itself needs replacing, it's worth checking a short list of common look-alikes documented by field engineers working on this exact board family:
- A completely dark board (no LEDs) can point to a blown fuse or open switch on the PD-core supply for that channel, rather than a failed VPRO.
- Because VPRO and VCMI ride the same IONet, a single failing VPRO channel has been observed to set off VCMI diagnostic alarms on all three control cores simultaneously — investigate whether the alarms trace to one root cause before ordering three boards.
- GE's TIL-1905 bulletin covers boards built between May 2006 and February 2009 with a socketed IONet transceiver chip that can oxidize and cause intermittent comm faults that look exactly like a bad board.
- Panel-level issues — RF interference, poor grounding, corrosion, humidity — have all been reported as causes of intermittent VPRO-related alarms that clear up without any board replacement at all.
