IS220PPDAH1A: Why "I/O Card" Undersells What This Pack Does
Calling this pack an "input/output card" isn't wrong, but it undersells what makes it different from the discrete and analog I/O packs elsewhere in a Mark VIe panel. PPDA is GE's Power Distribution System Feedback pack, documented in GE's GEH-6721 Mark VIe Control System Guide. It doesn't read field sensors or drive field devices at all — instead, it monitors the health of the power distribution hardware itself and reports that health to the <R>, <S>, or <T> controller over a redundant Ethernet (IONet) connection. It does not take direct protective action on its own; it reports diagnostic information, and any corrective response has to already be programmed into the controller's application code.
Unlike PDIA, PDIO, or PAIC, PPDA doesn't mount on a field-wiring terminal board at all. It mounts directly on one of the Mark VIe's 28 V control power distribution boards — JPDS, JPDC, JPDM, or JPDG — using two screw standoffs, and can extend its reach to as many as six power distribution boards total, including JPDB, JPDE, and JPDF, chained together with 50-pin ribbon cable jumpers wired pin-to-pin. Each board contributes one feedback group to the PPDA pack, which uses electronic IDs to identify what's connected and populate the correct feedback onto IONet automatically.
What it actually reports: power bus voltage levels, fused switched branch circuit status, ground fault detection (in combination with a JPDE board), bulk power supply health, and a local ground signal, among other diagnostic points.
Suffix and Generation, Explained
IS220 marks a Mark VIe distributed I/O pack, PPDA the power distribution feedback function specifically (not a general discrete or analog I/O type), H1 the design generation, and A the hardware revision, built around a BPPB processor board. The H1B revision that follows it uses a functionally compatible BPPC processor board instead, and requires ControlST software V04.07 or later. Diagnosing a PPDA Fault Before You Order One
A documented Frame 9E gas turbine case is a useful guide here. After a normal shutdown, the plant saw a cluster of PPDA-related alarms — power feed faults, bus-not-regulating conditions, and a communication fault — and noticed every LED on the PPDA pack except the communication LEDs blinking faintly, both while the pack was mounted and after it was removed from its board. That last detail mattered: because the odd LED behavior persisted even with the pack unplugged and powered separately, it pointed at the pack itself rather than the board it sits on. An experienced responder on the case still cautioned against jumping straight to a replacement, noting that a voltage spike could just as easily have damaged the board the PPDA mounts to, or that a ribbon cable connecting power distribution boards could simply be seated poorly. Before ordering a replacement pack:
- Power-test the suspect pack off its board, if it's safe to do so, to see whether the symptom follows the pack or stays with the board.
- Inspect the ribbon cables linking the power distribution boards for a loose seat — with power off, using appropriate PPE, never unplugging live.
- Rule out a recent voltage spike or dip on the AC or DC feeds to the power distribution module.
- Remember that PPDA reports on system health but doesn't perform protection itself; a fault here doesn't necessarily mean the turbine's protective functions are compromised, but it does mean you've lost visibility into power bus and ground-fault conditions until it's resolved.
