The data path it manages is the COREBUS, the internal ARCNET network of the Mark V LM. On a 10 ms frame cycle, each IO Engine transmits its packaged analog and digital values to the Control Engine's database and picks up the output packet coming back. Lose one UCPB and you have not lost a channel; you have lost an entire core's worth of I/O until the board is replaced.
A fit check before you commit
New surplus deserves the same diagnostic discipline as any other purchase, because the fastest way to waste a good board is to install it into a fault that was never the processor. Confirm the failure is genuinely core-wide — all of one IO Engine's values stale, communication diagnostics against that engine — rather than a single bad channel, which points to an analog or digital I/O board instead. Verify the TCPS supply in the same rack, since a dead supply and a dead CPU look identical from the operator screens. Inspect the COREBUS drop and its connectors. Then reboot the core once by its power switch and watch the MON_SYS COREBUS status page from the HMI. If the engine still will not join, the daughterboard is a rational buy.
Factory packaging, firmware, and configuration
Two layers of "software" matter when a UCPB is swapped. The IO configuration — the data that tells the engine what its I/O boards are and how to scale them — is not something you lose with the old board: GEH-6153 notes that each IO Engine receives its configuration from the Control Engine at every reboot, so a correctly addressed replacement picks up the site configuration on start. The board-resident layer is different. The UCPB carries its BIOS and code in flash EPROM, and GE's general replacement guidance for the platform is to match hardware settings to the outgoing board — the COREBUS address DIP switches especially, plus the board's small set of jumpers (supplier documentation lists JP1 and JP3 as factory-test jumpers and JP2 as the 486 local bus speed selector).
