IS220PPDAH1A: A Real Fault Report Worth Reading Before You Order
A Frame 9E gas turbine running on liquid fuel, controlled by Mark VIe, is a useful real-world case for anyone facing a PPDA-related alarm. After a normal shutdown, the site's ToolboxST showed a long list of active alarms: DC power supply undervoltage, an IO pack communication fault, PPDA Pbus source faults on all three legs (<R>, <S>, and <T>), bus-not-regulating conditions, a battery ground indication, and a PPDA power feed fault. Every LED on the PPDA pack except the communication LEDs was blinking faintly — and critically, it kept doing that even when the pack was removed from its board and powered separately, which is what convinced the site the pack itself, not the board it mounts on, was the actual fault.
Even with that evidence in hand, the engineer who responded on the case still recommended caution: a voltage spike or dip could just as easily have damaged the board the PPDA sits on, and a loose ribbon cable connecting power distribution components could produce very similar symptoms. He also laid out the correct way to power-cycle a Mark VIe panel to rule those things out — protective processors sequenced relative to control processors, never by simply opening and closing the main breaker, and never unplugging a board while it's still live. In that case, a genuine replacement pack was eventually installed and reconfigured through ToolboxST (boot loader, baseload, firmware, and parameters), and it resolved the fault.

Unlike PDIA, PDIO, or PAIC, it doesn't read field sensors or drive field devices; it monitors the power distribution hardware in the cabinet — power bus voltages, branch circuit fuse status, ground fault detection, bulk supply health — and reports it to the controller over IONet. It takes no direct protective action itself; the response to what it reports has to already be programmed into the control system.
Ruling Things Out First
- Test the suspect pack powered but disconnected from its board, if it can be done safely, to see whether the symptom is really in the pack or in the board underneath it.
- Check ribbon cable connections between power distribution boards for a poor seat before assuming a hardware failure.
- Follow the correct power-cycling sequence for a Mark VIe panel rather than simply opening the main breaker — improper power cycling can itself produce or mask fault symptoms.
- Note whether the alarm set is isolated to one controller leg or spans all three; that narrows down pack, board, or shared power feed as the likely cause.
- Budget time for a full ToolboxST reconfiguration after installing a replacement — auto-recognition of the attached boards doesn't eliminate the need to download firmware and parameters.
