IS220PPDAH1A: What It Actually Monitors

PPDA — GE's Power Distribution System Feedback pack for the Speedtronic Mark VIe platform, documented in GE's GEH-6721 Mark VIe Control System Guide — exists to answer one question continuously: is the power feeding the control system actually healthy? It reports power bus voltage magnitude, the status of fused switched branch circuits, ground fault conditions (working with a JPDE board), bulk power supply health, and a local ground reference, sending all of it to the <R>, <S>, or <T> controller over a redundant Ethernet (IONet) link. What it does not do is act on any of it directly — PPDA reports, and whatever corrective response is needed has to already exist in the controller's application code.
On power-up and continuously during operation, the pack runs its own internal checks: a self-test of the processor board, Ethernet ports, RAM, and flash memory; ongoing monitoring of its own internal power supply; verification that the electronic IDs of the terminal board, acquisition card, and processor card actually match the loaded application code; a precision reference-voltage check on every scan of the analog input circuitry; and comparison of the A/D converter's measured values against expected values. Physically, PPDA doesn't mount on a field-wiring terminal board like PDIA, PDIO, or PAIC. It mounts on one of the Mark VIe's 28 V control power distribution boards — JPDS, JPDC, JPDM, or JPDG — secured with two screw standoffs, and reads feedback from up to six power distribution boards total (including JPDB, JPDE, and JPDF) chained by 50-pin ribbon cable. Electronic IDs on each attached board let the pack identify what it's connected to and populate the right feedback automatically, without manual mapping.
If You're Troubleshooting Before You Buy
- A fault reported against PPDA doesn't automatically mean the pack has failed — the power distribution board it's mounted on, or the ribbon cables linking multiple boards together, are just as plausible a cause and cheaper to rule out first.
- Voltage spikes or dips on the AC or DC feed into the power distribution module are a documented cause of failures attributed to this pack.
- Check whether the alarm set is isolated to one leg (R, S, or T) or affects all three; that distinction narrows down whether the problem is the pack, the board, or a shared power feed.
- If you do replace the pack, expect to reconfigure it through ToolboxST (bootloader, baseload, firmware, and parameters) even though electronic ID recognition is designed to be largely automatic.
