IS220PDIOH1B: What "28VDC" on the Label Actually Refers To
This unit ships new surplus, factory packaged, unused, with a 1-year warranty. The "28VDC" callout in its listing refers to the pack's own nominal logic supply — the power that runs its processor and Ethernet electronics — not necessarily the field-side signal voltage, which is instead set by whichever discrete input/output terminal board is bolted underneath it. PDIO is GE's Speedtronic Mark VIe pack combining discrete contact input and relay output on one assembly, documented in GE's GEH-6721 Mark VIe Control System Guide; it is the functional equivalent of a PDIA and a PDOA pack combined.
The pack reads up to 24 contact inputs and drives up to 12 relay outputs, plus terminal-board feedback signals, and reports to the <R>, <S>, or <T> controller over IONet through dual RJ-45 ports. Discrete signals pass through a DC-62 connector direct to the terminal board. The H1B hardware generation is compatible with terminal board combinations built for hazardous locations — documented as Intrinsically Safe Apparatus, approved for Class I Division 2 Groups A-D, Class I Zone 2 Group IIC, and ATEX Zone 2 Group IIC — in addition to standard-duty terminal boards.
Reading a Real Diagnostic Alarm Correctly
A documented case on this pack type shows how a specific alarm can mislead if read too literally. After a routine logic change (an input marked from used to unused) and a download, a plant saw the diagnostic alarm "Contact Input (x) not responding to self-test mode" on a PDIO pack. Per GE documentation, the standard remedy for that alarm is to replace the I/O pack — and the site did, but the alarm persisted. As other engineers pointed out afterward, that outcome points toward the terminal board or the specific input circuit rather than the pack itself, since the alarm is pack-specific but its root cause is not guaranteed to be inside the pack. A second alarm the same site saw, "Configuration mismatch with auto reconfiguration server," is a separate, software-level condition typically resolved with a controller download rather than a hardware swap — worth ruling out on its own before ordering parts.
Before You Order a Replacement
- Confirm whether the alarm is specific to one channel or affects every I/O pack on the panel; a panel-wide alarm points toward the terminal board, IONet switch, or configuration rather than one bad pack.
- Check whether the input in question is actually in use; an alarm on an unused channel behaves differently than one on a live channel.
- Distinguish a Process Alarm (bad field value) from a Diagnostic Alarm (hardware or communications fault) before committing to a parts order.
- Verify Simplex, Dual, or TMR configuration and the terminal board type actually installed — the pack's own part number won't tell you the terminal board's field voltage or hazardous-location rating.
- Inspect IONet cabling and connectors, and rule out cabinet heat and dust as contributing factors.
