About the IS215VPROH2BC VPRO Card
This IS215VPROH2BC is a GE Speedtronic Mark VI VPRO board, one of the three cards that make up a turbine's Emergency Turbine Protection system. Unlike the turbine control processors, VPRO exists for one purpose only: detect an overspeed condition independently and drive the trip solenoids if the turbine needs to shut down. It's built to the H2 design, which supports a single TREG terminal board (the H1 design supports two, through VPRO connector J4).
How VPRO, TPRO and TREG Work Together
The VPRO card itself doesn't touch the trip solenoids directly — it hands that job to the terminal boards. TREG supplies the positive connection to the solenoids, TPRO the negative, and the turbine can be tripped from either terminal board independently. That split between logic (VPRO) and hardwired output (TPRO/TREG) is deliberate: a fault on one side doesn't necessarily disable the other.
Communication-wise, each VPRO channel is powered from its own switch and fuse in the PD (power distribution) core and talks to the rest of the system over IONet, the coax network shared with the VCMI boards in the turbine's control racks. VPRO does not sit on the VME backplane and does not talk directly to the UCVE processor — the VCMI handles that translation.
Field-Proven Diagnostic Steps
Techs working on Mark VI systems have documented several situations where a VPRO-related alarm turned out not to be the VPRO board itself:
- A VPRO board found completely powered down, with no LED activity, has been traced to a blown fuse at its dedicated PD-core switch rather than the board itself — check power first.
- Because VPRO shares IONet with VCMI, a single VPRO fault has triggered VCMI diagnostic alarms across all three control cores at once. Don't treat every simultaneous alarm as a separate board failure.
- Boards manufactured between May 2006 and February 2009 fall under GE TIL-1905, which describes intermittent communication faults caused by an oxidized socketed IONet transceiver chip rather than genuine board failure.
- RF interference, poor grounding, corrosion, and cabinet condensation are all documented, non-board causes of intermittent VPRO and VCMI alarms.
