IS215VPROH2BC Emergency Turbine Protection Board
The IS215VPROH2BC is a GE Speedtronic Mark VI VPRO board, part of the H2 design line, the lower-power VPRO variant that supports a single TREG terminal board per channel (the H1 design supports two, wired through VPRO connector J4). Its job is emergency overspeed protection, one of three VPRO cards that run in parallel to keep the turbine safe if it ever overspeeds.
Why This Is a Separate Module From Turbine Control
GE built the VPRO protection system to be functionally isolated from turbine control. Each of the three VPRO channels has its own power feed from the PD (power distribution) core, and each reaches the rest of the system over IONet rather than the VME backplane shared by the I/O boards. The VCMI board bridges that IONet traffic back to the UCVE processor; VPRO and UCVE do not communicate with each other directly.
On the output side, the VPRO drives trip solenoids through the TREG terminal board (positive connection) with TPRO providing the negative connection — either terminal board can initiate a trip, adding a hardwired layer of redundancy underneath the VPRO logic.
Don't Replace the VPRO Until You've Checked This
Because VPRO alarms often show up alongside other Mark VI diagnostics, it pays to isolate the actual cause before ordering a board:
- A VPRO with no LEDs at all can be a blown fuse or open switch on its dedicated PD-core supply rather than a card failure — check that first.
- VPRO and VCMI share the same IONet loop, so a single failing VPRO channel can trigger VCMI diagnostic alarms on all three control cores simultaneously. Multiple alarms don't necessarily mean multiple bad boards.
- GE TIL-1905 documents a known issue on boards built between May 2006 and February 2009: a socketed IONet transceiver chip that can oxidize and cause intermittent communication faults that look like a board failure.
- Environmental factors — RF interference near an open panel, grounding issues, corrosion, condensation — are all documented real-world causes of intermittent VPRO- and VCMI-related alarms.
We stop at diagnosis here on purpose. Trip setpoints, voting logic, and any actual trip testing belong in GEH-6421 and your plant's approved test procedure, not a parts listing.
