What Is the IS215VPROH1BG?
The IS215VPROH1BG is a GE Speedtronic Mark VI VPRO board, one of three Emergency Turbine Protection cards that give the turbine an overspeed protection path completely separate from its normal control system. If the turbine control processors misbehave, the VPRO cores are designed to keep working regardless, and vice versa.
This is an H1-family board, meaning it's built to support two TREG terminal boards per channel through VPRO connector J4, unlike the lower-power H2 design which supports only one. If your rack currently has two TREG boards wired to a single VPRO channel, you need an H1 board like this one; an H2 will not support that configuration.
Position in the Triple-Redundant Protection Core
Three VPRO boards run side by side, each independently powered from the PD (power distribution) core and each communicating over its own IONet connection rather than the VME backplane the rest of the rack's I/O uses. The VCMI board is the only link between the VPRO protection cores and the UCVE processor that runs turbine control — VPRO never talks to UCVE directly.
The trip path itself runs through the TREG board (positive connection to the solenoids) and TPRO (negative connection), with either terminal board able to initiate a trip independently.
Diagnostic Checklist Before Ordering
A handful of real-world issues get mistaken for a bad VPRO board:
- Check the PD-core fuse and switch dedicated to that VPRO channel first — a completely dark board (no LEDs) is sometimes a power problem, not a card failure.
- If VCMI diagnostic alarms are appearing on more than one control core at the same time, look for a shared cause (IONet cabling, a single failing VPRO, grounding) before replacing multiple boards.
- Boards built between May 2006 and February 2009 are covered by GE TIL-1905, describing an oxidized socketed transceiver chip that can cause intermittent IONet communication faults resembling a hard failure.
- Rule out environmental causes — RF interference, poor grounding, corrosion, and condensation inside the panel have all been documented as sources of intermittent, VPRO-like alarms.
This list stops at diagnosis on purpose. Trip setpoints, voting logic, and test procedures are the domain of GEH-6421 and your plant's approved test procedure, not something to reconstruct from a parts listing.
