The role of the primary protection card
VTUR is the primary protective element for turbine speed in a Mark VI. It reads up to four passive magnetic pickups over roughly 2 Hz to 20,000 Hz, uses the median speed for both control and the primary overspeed trip, and resolves very low rotation so the control can detect zero speed and manage turning gear. On a trip it drives three primary overspeed relays on a TRPx terminal board (TRPG on gas machines, TRPS or TRPL on steam), which act on the emergency trip devices. Within a TMR system a VTUR runs in each of the <R>, <S>, and <T> cores under voting; simplex systems use one. Independent emergency overspeed protection is provided separately by the VPRO card in the <P> protection core, so the two paths should never be confused during fault-finding.
Troubleshooting a VTUR complaint the right way
The card is safety-critical and not cheap, so it pays to prove the fault before replacing it. These symptoms usually trace to something other than the VTUR:

Speed signal lost or unstable: examine the magnetic pickup and its gap, the field wiring to TTUR, and the JR5 speed cable. In a TMR set, one bad channel is voted out and does not by itself mean the card has failed.

Overspeed trip fired unexpectedly, or a trip test did not complete: investigate the TRPx and TREx trip boards, the trip-solenoid wiring, and the trip power feed before the card.

Flame-detector alarms on gas turbines: check the Geiger-Mueller detector and its external supply routed through TRPG, since fouling or a supply fault mimics a card issue.

Automatic synchronizing or 52G breaker problems: the PT inputs and breaker relays sit on TTUR, so the fault is usually there, not on the VTUR.

Card unrecognized by the controller: reseat it and verify backplane power and firmware revision compatibility.
The HMI fault log will normally show which element latched, which is the quickest way to keep a healthy card in service.
