What an extender board is for
The IC3606DEXB is not a control card. It is a card extender — a service tool. You plug it into an empty slot in a Speedtronic Mark I or Mark II rack, then plug the card you are troubleshooting into the extender. The card now sits proud of the rack, powered and live, with its components and test points physically reachable while the system runs.
Without one, diagnosing an IC3600 card means either pulling it dead or probing blind between two neighbouring cards. Anyone who maintains a Mark I or Mark II panel and does not own an extender is working with one hand tied.
Why this one is hard to find
The IC3600 and IC3606 series belong to the Speedtronic Mark I and Mark II generation — the oldest turbine control systems GE still has running in the field. Extender boards were never bought in the quantities that control cards were: a site might own one for an entire panel, or none at all. Fifty years later, that means the surviving population is small.
If you run a Mark I or Mark II and you see one available, the case for buying it is not that you need it today. It is that when you do need it, there may not be one.
Prefix note: IC3606 vs IC3600
Both prefixes belong to the same Mark I / Mark II generation, and they are frequently cross-referenced. The IC3606 numbers cover functions including isolated inputs, annunciator master cards, thermo process module switches, and — as here — card extenders. Do not assume a prefix difference means a different generation; quote the full number and let us confirm.
