IS215VCMIH2C: The Mark VI Rack's Communications Hub
The IS215VCMIH2CC is the VCMI — VME Communications Interface — board used in GE Speedtronic Mark VI turbine control racks. Think of it as the traffic controller for its rack: it's the VME bus master, meaning it manages the IDs of every board in the rack and their associated terminal boards, and it's the only path in or out of that rack over IONet.
On the front faceplate you'll find a serial port, three IONet 10Base2 BNC ports (each with its own TX/RX/CD LEDs on the H2 design), Run/Fail/Status LEDs above a reset pushbutton, and a set of module ID LEDs. All of that lines up with what's documented in GEH-6421, the Mark VI system manual.
How VCMI Talks to the Backplane and IONet
Inside the rack, the VCMI moves data between the I/O boards and the UCVE processor over the VME backplane. Outside the rack, it uses IONet to reach the VPRO protection boards and the VCMI cards on the other two channels of a TMR system. In a small TMR system where all the I/O lives in the control rack, the VCMI's three IONet ports map one-to-one to the <R>, <S> and <T> channels; in larger systems with remote I/O racks, each remote rack gets its own VCMI, all sharing the same IONet backbone.
The VCMI does not talk to the plant HMI directly. That connection runs through the UCVE processor over Ethernet, using Toolbox and Cimplicity.
Before You Order: Common Look-Alike Faults
A VCMI alarm is not automatically a VCMI failure. A few things worth checking first, based on documented field cases:
- Fault codes logged against one core's VCMI have, in practice, pointed to a communication problem on a different core's card sharing the same IONet — confirm which card and core the fault actually belongs to before ordering.
- Check IONet cabling and BNC connectors for corrosion or looseness, verify terminal resistors, and check the VME supply voltages (5V, 15V) at the card. Cleaning and reseating the card in its slot has resolved persistent alarms without any hardware replacement.
- GE TIL-1905 documents an oxidized-socket transceiver chip issue on VCMI boards (H1B, H1C, H2B, H2C) built between May 2006 and February 2009 that produces intermittent communication faults resembling a hard failure.
- Radio interference, poor grounding, corrosive atmosphere, and condensation inside the cabinet are all documented, non-board causes of intermittent VCMI diagnostics.
What Changes With the H2CC Suffix
IS215 identifies the Mark VI assembly family, VCMI the function, H2 the three-port design for TMR systems, C the flash memory generation of the board, and the final C the specific revision. Revisions need to match your Toolbox configuration — send us a label photo if you're not certain the C revision is correct for your system, and we'll verify before you order.
Boards Commonly Sourced Alongside This One
If you're replacing a VCMI, there's a fair chance VPRO, terminal boards, or older Mark V equipment are also part of the job. Use our GE Speedtronic Part Number Decoder to check any other board number, and see Mark V vs Mark VI: DS200 to IS200 if your plant runs both generations. The full board range is under GE Mark VI IS200 Boards.
