IS220PPDAH1B: The One Confirmed Difference From H1A
This unit ships new, factory packaged, with a 1-year warranty. PPDA is GE's Power Distribution System Feedback pack for the Mark VIe platform, documented in GE's GEH-6721 Mark VIe Control System Guide: it monitors the health of the power distribution hardware in a control cabinet and reports it to the <R>, <S>, or <T> controller over IONet, rather than reading field sensors or driving field devices the way PDIA, PDIO, or PAIC do. It takes no direct protective action of its own — it reports, and the controller's application code has to already contain the logic to act on what it reports.
Between the two hardware generations of this pack, one difference is specifically documented: H1A is built around a BPPB processor board, while H1B uses a functionally compatible BPPC processor board instead. That BPPC-based H1B pack requires ControlST software version 04.07.00 or later to operate correctly — worth confirming against your site's ControlST version before you install this unit, particularly if the rest of your panel hasn't been upgraded recently.
Mounting-wise, PPDA doesn't sit on a field-wiring terminal board the way most IS220 packs do. It mounts on one of the Mark VIe's 28 V control power distribution boards — JPDS, JPDC, JPDM, or JPDG — and can take feedback from up to six power distribution boards in total, including JPDB, JPDE, and JPDF, linked by 50-pin ribbon cable. Using electronic IDs read from each connected board, it identifies what's attached and reports power bus voltage, branch circuit fuse status, ground fault conditions (with a JPDE board present), and bulk power supply health onto IONet automatically.
Before You Assume the Pack Has Failed
- Confirm your ControlST version supports the BPPC-based H1B pack before installing it; a version mismatch can look like a hardware fault.
- Check whether the fault alarms are specific to the PPDA pack alone or also implicate the power distribution board it's mounted on — a voltage spike or dip is just as capable of damaging the board as the pack.
- Inspect the ribbon cables linking power distribution boards for a poor seat, with power removed and proper PPE, before assuming the pack itself is at fault.
- Follow GE's documented power-down and power-up sequence for the panel (protective processors before control processors on power-up) if you need to cycle power to troubleshoot — simply opening and closing the main breaker is not the correct method and can complicate diagnosis.
- A genuine replacement will still typically need reconfiguration through ToolboxST — bootloader, baseload, firmware, and parameters — even though the pack is designed to identify its environment automatically via electronic ID.
