Physically, the DS200TCQAG1B carries four 34-pin connectors, two 40-pin connectors, one 16-pin connector, one 9-pin connector, and six jumpers — enough hardware to concentrate a good part of the analog instrumentation for an entire Mark V core. Thermocouples (with built-in cold-junction compensation), vibration sensors, 4-20 mA inputs, LVDTs, and generator/line signals all come in through this board before turning into a software value for the rest of the control system.
Function and Position
The TCQA occupies position 2 of each of the <R>, <S>, and <T> cores. This is where field signals are scaled and conditioned before moving on to the rest of the core's boards.
Why a "Bad" Thermocouple Isn't Always the Board
When a temperature channel starts oscillating or locks onto an implausible value, the temptation is to blame the conditioning board. But triple thermocouples (averaged across the three values) and cold-junction compensation cabling are far more common failure points than the TCQA itself. Before requesting a board replacement:
- Compare the same channel across all three cores — if only one core diverges, it's the suspect; if all three agree on the wrong value, the problem is in the sensor or the terminal board.
- Check the field wiring and connectors (including corrosion on the flat-cable pins) before the board.
- Confirm no recent wiring change has moved signal cables closer to power cables — induced noise mimics a channel fault.
