DS3800HUMB1B1B: New-Surplus Universal Memory Board
The DS3800HUMB is the Universal Memory Board (UMB) of the GE Speedtronic Mark IV turbine control system, and it is one of the few Mark IV boards worth keeping on the shelf as a cold spare rather than sourcing only after a failure. Reason being: the UMB stores the site's application program and control constants on its EPROM/EEPROM modules, which the <R>, <S>, and <T> processors of the panel's Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) architecture depend on at startup. If this board goes down, the whole panel is effectively waiting on it, which is why many operators prefer new-surplus, factory-packaged stock like this unit over a scramble repair.
Mechanically, the board is designed for rapid rack exchange: a modular connector on one end and retention levers on the other allow removal and reinsertion without disturbing neighboring cards. The front edge carries a single red status LED and a toggle switch used when erasing and reprogramming the memory modules. Internally, 30 jumpers and their associated single-pin connectors and module sockets are organized into four quads (A, B, C, D); pin numbering resets in each quad, so any reference to a specific pin needs the quad letter to be meaningful.
The Trap: Don't Swap the UMB for a Fault That Isn't the UMB
Even when you are holding a spare, it pays to confirm the UMB is actually the failed part before pulling the old one:
-
Reseat first. A UMB that walked loose in its connector or levers during other rack work can throw the same alarms as a dead board.
-
Check the modules before the carrier. The program lives on the EPROM/EEPROM modules. If your existing board's modules are good, they typically get moved onto the replacement's empty sockets — a module contact issue can masquerade as a full board failure.
-
Look at rack power first. Voltage sag or noise on the supply feeding the rack can generate intermittent checksum or configuration alarms that clear on a clean power cycle.
-
Confirm the fault is really the UMB's. Its single LED is a general status indicator, not a detailed self-diagnostic, so cross-check the alarm text and quad against what the UMB actually controls before condemning it.
If those checks confirm the board itself, having this new-surplus unit ready to install means the turbine is back in service without waiting on a repair turnaround.
Suffix 1B1B, Explained
In DS3800HUMB1B1B, "DS3800" is the Mark IV board series, "HUMB" is the function code for Universal Memory Board, and "1B1B" is the trailing revision/variant code. GE issued this board under several suffixes, and they are not interchangeable by default — match your existing nameplate suffix wherever possible, or check with us first. See our GE Speedtronic Part Number Decoder for a general walkthrough of how these codes are structured.
Other Mark IV Boards and What Comes After Mark IV
The UMB shares the panel with other DS3800 boards, including the DS3800HFPG Drive Control Board, DS3800HMPK Microprocessor/Regulator Control Board, and DS3800NDAC Analog Output Board — all listed in our GE Mark IV DS3800 Boards collection. If your facility has since moved to Mark V (DS200-series) or Mark VI/VIe (IS200-series), those platforms use different hardware rather than a drop-in replacement; our Mark V vs Mark VI: DS200 to IS200 guide walks through the differences if that's useful for your planning.
