An overheating microprocessor can fault the board under load and then clear once things cool down — a classic "it worked again after we swapped it, but the spare failed too" scenario that's actually a routing and cooling issue, not a bad board.
• The EPROM modules, not the carrier. The programming code lives on the EPROM modules, which are normally moved from the old board to a replacement (which ships with empty sockets) rather than sourced pre-programmed. A poorly reseated module can present as a full board failure.
• Test points first. The board's front-accessible test points let you check individual circuits before condemning the whole card.

If reseating, cable routing, and the EPROM modules all check out and the fault persists, replacement is the right call.
